The proposed Universal theme park and resort planned for Bedford has taken a significant step forward, with planning permission now officially approved by the UK government.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has confirmed that permission has been granted through a Special Development Order, marking one of the most important milestones so far in the development of what would become the first Universal branded theme park and resort in the United Kingdom and Europe.

While the project must still pass through a statutory parliamentary review period, this approval represents a major vote of confidence in the long term vision for the site and clears a key hurdle in the planning process.

Universal has reiterated that the resort is expected to deliver a substantial economic boost to both the region and the wider UK, with estimates of up to £50 billion in direct and indirect economic impact over time. The development is also set to be one of the area’s largest employers, creating around 20,000 construction jobs during the build phase and approximately 8,000 permanent roles once the resort becomes operational. Around 80 percent of these roles are expected to be filled by local workers.

In addition to job creation, the project is expected to drive major infrastructure improvements, including upgrades to Wixams railway station and new direct slip roads connecting the site to the A421, helping improve access and transport capacity in the area.

In a statement, Page Thompson, President of New Ventures at Universal Destinations & Experiences, thanked both national and local stakeholders for their engagement and support, highlighting the enthusiasm shown by the Bedford community and surrounding areas. Universal also confirmed it will begin sharing more details in the coming months, including information about job opportunities and how local suppliers and businesses can potentially get involved!

Universal says it remains committed to regular updates as the project progresses and encourages those interested to keep an eye on official channels for further announcements.
